Territory

The Chilean territory is located at the Southwest of South America, from 17º 30' to 90º south latitude. Its continental length is 4,200 km approximately, and 8,000 km considering the Antarctic region. Easter Island or Rapa Nui, the Archipelago of Juan Fernandez and Islands San Félix, San Ambrosio, Salas y Gómez, also belong to Chile, as well as 200 miles of the territorial sea and the respective continental platform. |

Chile limits North with Peru, East with Bolivia y Argentina, West with the Pacific Ocean and South with the South Pole.

Population

According to census 2002, the country has 15,116,435 inhabitants, showing an accelerated population growth during the last years. Inhabitants density in relation to the territory is 19,3 per km2.

Language

The official language is Spanish (Castilian), though there are native languages that are still in use, like the Mapudungún (or Mapuche), the Quechua and the Rapa nui.

Government System

Chile is a Republic which is governed by a democratic government delimited by the three branches of government: the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch.
At present, the President of Chile is Sebastian Piñera Echeñique, who represents a conglomerate of political parties belonging to the centre-right.

The currency unit is the Chilean peso. The exchange rate with the dollar and euro shall be informed according to the date of the trip. Money can be exchanged freely in banks and money exchange offices. No special documentation is needed. For your convenience, the Airport offers also this kind of services.

Metallic coins are minted as $5, $10, $50, $100 and $500. |
